The true event-inspired Broadway phenomenon Come From Away is coming to Red Bank, New Jersey, this spring. On Wednesday 16th April 2025, Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center for the Arts will present the uplifting, award-winning performance that tells the tale of a charming Canadian town coming to the rescue of thousands of stranded airline passengers during the tragic events of 9/11.
When the USA fell under attack, the country forced 38 planes with over 6,500 passengers to go to ground in Gander, New Foundland, a small city with a big heart. During this time of global confusion, heartbreak, and fear, the Gander locals opened their homes, schools, and churches to these thousands of stranded passengers who were waiting for permission to head back home. Over those 5 days, the people in this nondescript locale showed the power of generosity in times of turbulence, and the acclaimed performance Come From Away shares this tale with exciting musical numbers, accomplished actors, and an unforgettable performance all round.

Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center for the Arts proudly hosts some of the most acclaimed Broadway performances around, and this spring that lineup includes Come From Away. This musical adaptation of the book by the same name follows the true events-inspired story of Gander, Newfoundland, and its remarkable spirit of generosity in times of tragedy.
Early in the morning of September 11, 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration shut down their airspace as an emergency response to the Twin Towers debacle. This shutdown forced numerous planes to ground early and, fortunately, America's neighbor to the north opened its airports and military bases to American planes that needed to land. Among the many cities that took in stranded passengers was Gander in Newfoundland, a relatively small town of only 10,000 residents.
The townsfolk welcomed the 6,579 worried passengers with open arms and homes. The inspirational storytelling of this Broadway performance displays the various cultural clashes and adjustments of these two groups learning to live together while ultimately building lifelong friendships. This Broadway performance portrays an uplifting message of hope, heart, and the power of serving others in troubling times.
The initial idea for the show started with Michael Rubinoff, a lawyer and theater producer from Toronto. Rubinoff worked with several writing teams but eventually left it to David Hein and Irene Sankoff to turn this inspiring true story into a moving theatrical performance. Together, these two creatives wrote a book about the hospitality of the people of Gander and the music and lyrics for the spectacle they workshopped in Ontario.
After hearing the stories, Hein and Sankoff workshopped a 45-minute performance for the Canadian Music Theatre Project in 2012. The show's success later led to a full-blown production at Sheridan in 2013, finding its way to The National Alliance for Musical Theatre in New York. Eventually, Come From Away would arrive in the USA, performing for audiences in San Diego and Washington D.C. before finally making its Broadway appearance in 2017.
Following 7 musical nominations for the 71st Tony Awards, Come From Away became the longest-running Canadian musical on Broadway. The show has also won several awards, including the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical in 2017 and a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2017. From iconic songs like "Welcome to the Rock" and "On the Edge" to the well-accomplished crew, which includes Phillip Lowe, Alice Fearn, and David Thaxton, this Tony Award nominee will surely provide the performance of a lifetime.
