The award-winning show delves into enduring human themes centered on compassion, resilience, and humanity, as showcased in the wake of 9/11.
Join the audience as the Tony Award-nominated musical takes you to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. At that remote outpost, around 38 international flights were unexpectedly rerouted to a local airport. There, the planes remained, grounded during all of the trauma that gripped the world on September 11, 2001.
These stranded travelers instantly increased the obscure town's population nearly two times over. The story captures how Gander and its residents stepped up, offering help and supporting neighbors in need.

Come From Away takes the stage at Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center for the Arts this spring. The remarkable production delivers its uplifting message directly to Red Bank, New Jersey, on Thursday 17th April 2025. The hit Broadway musical serves as a tribute to the human spirit, celebrating the power of kindness and connection during a devastating international emergency.
The story focuses on the events of September 11, 2001, and how the events unexpectedly reached Gander, Newfoundland. 7,000 passengers from 38 flights, found themselves grounded in the remote town far from home and loved ones as that sunny mornings terrorist attacks cleared the skies.
Come From Away is the brainchild of Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the talented couple behind the book that went on become a musical adaptation and production score. For their research, the writers visited Gander on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 to meet with locals and even some of the "plane people" who had returned to rekindle the friendships built during the crisis.
Celtic, folk, and rock influences come together to paint a vivid picture of Newfoundland's culture and closeness. The live band brings the score to life onstage, including standout numbers like “Welcome to the Rock,” which sets the tone for Gander’s tale.
Since its release on Broadway, Come From Away has received universal recognition. It was a seven-time Tony Award nominee in 2017, including Best Musical, and won for Best Direction of a Musical. The production also earned Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Book of a Musical, and Outstanding Featured Actress.
